Critical Role of Constructive Relationship Management in Government, by AUN Professor Ibrahim Danjuma

AUN Professor of Business Administration, Professor Ibrahim Danjuma, has posited that the effective cultivation of vertical and horizontal relationships is an indispensable factor in the success of any elected government. He added that promoting accountability, inclusiveness, and mutual trust would complement these relationships to drive transformational change, enhance service delivery, and bolster public confidence in the government's abilities.

Presenting a paper: "Vertical and Horizontal Relationships in Government: A Framework for Effective Management for Good Governance," at a five-day retreat for newly appointed Commissioners and Permanent Secretaries from Adamawa State on October 17, 2023, in Yola, Professor Ibrahim Danjuma, chair/head of the Department of Business Administration and Marketing, AUN's School of Business and Entrepreneurship contended that the effective relationships are at the core of the business of governance.

"From vertical hierarchies to horizontal collaborations, a government that navigates these dynamics deftly will be in a better position to deliver not only satisfaction to its citizens but also surpassing their expectations."

The methodically researched paper established a comprehensive framework for administering vertical and horizontal relationships within the government of Adamawa state. Through in-depth analysis, pertinent case studies, and collaborative discussion, strategies that promote transparent communication channels, strengthen cross-functional collaboration, and maximize resource allocation were exhaustively discussed.

The paper concluded that "(The Adamawa State) Government should ensure that high-level directives effectively flow downward and steer the course towards common goals by emphasizing clear communication channels, objectives alignment, and decisive decision-making within vertical relationships."

"We have observed how power dynamics, information constraints, and conflict resolution can be overcome, fostering a culture of openness and cooperation," Professor Danjuma said.
