#GetAUNGreen Kicks Off, Power Saving Competition Loading

As part of the #GetAUNGreen project launched on campus on March 2, 2020, a power-saving contest begins soon among the halls of residence. Energy Stakeholders, a volunteer group, therefore, has urged Residence Directors and the Student Government Association (SGA) to start sensitizing students ahead of the program.

The spokesman for the group Fardeen Dodo of the School of Business & Entrepreneurship (SBE) is also engaging his students in the ENT 328 (Innovation for a Sustainable Society) class in the campaign that is aimed at cultivating the culture of energy saving among members of the university community. Another strategic partner in the project is the Office of Sustainability Initiatives.

Mr. Dodo, an SBE instructor, maintains that there are financial and environmental imperatives to conserve energy supplies at AUN. The competition will contribute to the creation of awareness into the hearts and minds of the AUN community as it hopes to reduce the University's spending on diesel and public mains power supply.

The proposed competition among the residence halls is one of the numerous fallouts from the Energy Stakeholders meeting that took place on February 19, 2020. Among other activities are campaigns to get everyone to understand the value of energy-saving and imbibe a sustainability culture. Another is to engage the cleaners and security operatives in a program to help acquaint them with how to conserve energy and water.

Meanwhile, the Energy Champions Team that has been created stresses that members of the community should endeavor to shut down the lights, ACs, and other appliances when the gadgets are not in use. They plan to roll out other means to educate users on the value of energy savings.

The team is responsible for the day-to-day promotion of energy savings and sustainability culture throughout AUN's units and departments. The team comprises all administrative aides to the deans, directors, and heads of departments, on-duty security operatives, Resident Directors, Fixed Assets custodians.

The stakeholders, on the other hand, will provide direction and oversight of the activities of the Energy Champions. Besides Mr. Dodo, the Energy Stakeholders include VP of Finance & Administration, Olanipekun Olanrewaju, the Director of Residence Life/Student Affairs, Bello Abdullahi, the SGA, and the Sustainability Office.
