Joining the Ranks, New Students Feel the Warmth of a Welcoming Community

To appreciate the warmth that defines the unique AUN experience, you have to feel it. On arrival at the airport, the student volunteers welcome you with joy and comforting words. On the bus ride to campus, the chatter gets livelier and more personal. Even the recluse begins to loosen up. You pass through Jimeta to Yola, hospitable, even leisurely. Forget the hustle and bustle of the city you left behind and embrace the seductive quietude of the American University of Nigeria’s Yola campus.

As every freshman looks back to their first encounter, the Fall 2024 orientation program welcoming the class of 2026, 2028, and 2029 rekindles cherished memories. The orientation program aims to acquaint new students with AUN's academic, social, and cultural milieu, equipping them for the forthcoming challenges and opportunities.

The orientation also featured a variety of activities aimed at helping students transition smoothly into university life. The program included campus tours, academic advising sessions, time management and study skills workshops, discussions on AUN's core values and the honor code of conduct, among others.

At the President’s Welcome Session, President DeWayne Frazier said AUN stands apart from other institutions, offering a unique experience beyond the classroom. "At AUN, you won't just be a student; you will be an active contributor to the local communities. This involvement is essential because you are the future leaders of this wonderful nation. By engaging with and becoming part of the community, you will gain the practical experience and understanding required to drive positive change and development in Nigeria. Your education here is unlike any of the schools in the country because it is not just about academic excellence—it's about making a real impact in the world around you."

To ensure they could easily navigate their academic pursuits and future careers, we also exposed the new students to leadership, career development, and digital literacy training. The new students expressed excitement about their new journey at AUN.

Mariama Jibriel Kanu, a Sierra Leone economics major, expressed her optimism about achieving her goals at AUN. "I believe I can achieve my goals, seeing the academic standards here at AUN," she remarked, reflecting on her first impressions of the university. The warm welcome from the current students, who volunteered to assist new arrivals like herself at the airport, further heightened Mariama's enthusiasm. Their kindness and willingness to help made her transition smoother, and they reassured her that she made the right choice by choosing AUN for her higher education journey.

Giwa Temiluwa, majoring in Politics and International Studies, was excited about joining the AUN, noting the vibrant and diverse environment. "I am happy with the environment, and I believe there will be great opportunities for networking here because of the variety of cultures and ethnicities represented," she shared. Giwa also highlighted the presence of experienced lecturers, stating, "I see many accomplished professors, and I know I will learn a great deal from them." For her, AUN represents not only a place to grow academically, but also a platform to make herself proud as she embarks on this new chapter of her educational journey.

Also, an economics major, Mohammed Abdulhamid, shared his enthusiasm. "The orientation has really helped to ease my anxiety about starting a university." I have met so many new people, and I'm already feeling at home."

As the new academic year begins, the American University of Nigeria stands ready to support its students in achieving their full potential and contributing positively to society.
