The American University of Nigeria (AUN) President, Dr. DeWayne Frazier, delivered a heartfelt and inspiring speech at the Spring 2025 Pledge Ceremony, welcoming the newest cohort of students into the university’s academic community. Reflecting on his journey since assuming office in May 2023, he spoke passionately about his deep appreciation for Nigeria, its people, and the vibrant culture he has embraced.
“The greatest thing about Nigeria is its people,” Dr. Frazier remarked. “They are generous, kind, and caring, and I have experienced this warmth both on our campus and in the greater Yola community,” he noted. This shows the cultural diversity at AUN, which allows for global engagement and cultural exchange.
Turning to the larger challenges facing the world, Dr. Frazier emphasized the role of education in addressing climate change, economic disparities, social injustices, and global health crises. He reminded the incoming students that they were not just joining a university but a community dedicated to fostering critical thinking, innovation, and service.
“In this rapidly evolving world, the ability to think critically to analyze, question, and innovate is essential,” he stated. “You will be equipped with the tools to tackle the pressing issues of our time, not just with knowledge, but with creativity and empathy.”
Dr. Frazier further underscored the importance of community service, urging students to engage actively with their communities, understand their needs, and contribute positively. He emphasized that service is no longer just an option but a necessity in today’s world.
“As you embark on this journey, I urge you to embrace the spirit of service. Whether through volunteer work, advocacy, or simply being an informed citizen, your actions can inspire change.”
Concluding his speech, the AUN President called on students to pledge not only to excel academically but to uphold the values of integrity, respect, and responsibility.
“Let your education be a beacon of hope, not just for yourselves, but for your families, your communities, and the world at large. AUN stands ready to support you on this journey, providing you with a robust education that prepares you to face the challenges of tomorrow.”
Welcoming the Class of 2025, Dr. Frazier assured the students that AUN would equip them with the knowledge, skills, and ethical foundation to become transformative leaders.
“Together, we can shape a future that reflects our highest aspirations and values. Welcome to the American University of Nigeria, and welcome to the future!”
