Writing 101 Students attend Digital & Information Literacy Workshop

Interim Director of the Writing Center and Writing 101 Instructor, Mrs. Emilienne Akpan, organized a guest lecture on Digital & Information Literacy (DIL) for her students on February 27, 2020.

DIL awareness was incorporated into the Writing 101 syllabus to acquaint the students with the resources available in the university's database to facilitate access to credible specialist information on diverse subjects.

Before the kickoff, Ms. Akpan tested the students' knowledge of DIL with a short pretest survey form.

"This is the best time to make good use of your note-taking and note-making skills to help you remember what you will learn in this class. Listen attentively because what you do not hear you can't write."

The Information Literacy Manager, Omachi Okolo, facilitated the workshop, elaborating on what research is, the purpose of conducting it, four basic research steps and how to find background information sources.

"This session will ease your term paper research and writing process."

Mr. Okolo also reminded the students to remain ever mindful of relevance while making research on a topic to ensure the right scholarly resources. To achieve that, the research topic needs to be narrowed down depending on how wide the discourse is, by utilizing certain keywords and metrics.

He demonstrated how to source pertinent materials using the database.
"Information literacy simply means the ability to access, organize, evaluate, and use information from various sources. While Computer literacy means knowing how to utilize technology to handle computer software or hardware."

A Law major, Clarissa Ifode, admitted that the class was impactful considering that she learned the best and easy way to access certified research sites from the database which applies to her research too.

Emmanuel Ugwoegbu, a sophomore and Biomedical Science major, said that he learned so much about how to access the library resources and the effective way of doing research.

The Writing 101 course unified new students from assorted fields of study to learn about research making and processes involved in outsourcing appropriate scholarly articles and materials for their chosen topics.
