Academic, Student Leaders Advise, Inspire New Students

Fall 2023 semester enrollees received tremendous moral support and motivation from key academic and student leaders through their weeklong in-boarding, orientation, and matriculation ceremony.

The Provost and Vice-President of Academic Affairs, Prof. Attahir Yusuf, assured them they would be treated as equal and respectable community members. He told the students that AUN is a modern, diverse college where everyone is treated with respect, equity, and dignity, irrespective of their cultural, religious, ethnic, or social backgrounds.

"No matter where you come from, you are today officially a member of the American University of Nigeria family. All of you here, and you will be so forever," he reaffirmed.

"We are very proud of you that you are able to make it to our university. It's a great university, and you have made the right choice. My students, you will soon discover that you have joined a lively, challenging, diverse, and warm learning community. My colleagues and I will look forward to know you, and providing all of you with a rich array of opportunities for you to learn, grow, discover who you are, and to define your place in the world," he stated, saying that the American University of Nigeria is the only genuinely American oriented university in Nigeria and the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Vice-President of Campus Live and Dean of Students Affairs Mr. Byron Bullock reiterated the need for students to heed their parents' advice, be humble and consistently exhibit good character, and use the internet wisely.

"There are so much installed for you if you are heeded to the advice you parents have instilled in you and use every opportunity you have to learn."

"In life, intelligence and talents play a part in how successful you will become as a student. But attitude matters much more. From this day forward, start cultivating a positive and resilient attitude.

"I will encourage you while you're here, to use the internet as a tool for education more than a tool for entertainment, the internet can keep you entertained for hours but if you use correctly it can make you a far more educated person," Dean Byron admonished.

President of the Student Government Association (SGA), Mr. Talford Ongolo Jr., informed them of all the service opportunities available at AUN that will groom them into leaders and the best versions of themselves. He let the students know about the campus while encouraging them to break out of their shells and connect to what interests them as individuals. He also assured them that their rights are always protected under the auspices of SGA and the Students Affairs Department.

At a different session after the President's welcome, deans and representatives of the various schools provided more detailed academic, curricular, and career-related information and responded to inquiries from students and parents.

At that interactive session, Prof. Ibrahim Danjuma represented the Business School, Prof. Abubakar Sadiq Hussaini represented the School of Engineering, Prof. Patrick Fay represented SAS, and Dr. Rabiu Ibrahim represented SITC; Prof. Yusuf Mohammed spoke for the AUN School of Law.
